Water Softeners and Filters are simply
tanks and media. A water softener is a tank filled with an ion exchange resin
meaning as water is forced through the media by water pressure, the water comes
in contact with these resin beads which have the opposite electron charge as the
minerals in the water. The minerals in the water are attracted to the resin
beads and attach themselves to it. That is why salt water or brine is needed to
occasionally rinse through the resin beads and "recharge" them taking the
attached minerals with it.
A
Water Filter such as an activated
carbon filter works much the same way as a water softener. Water is forced
through the activated carbon media and impurities such as chlorine and salt are
chemically altered or removed from your water. The filter media eventually loads
up with impurities and must be rinsed also. Certain types of filter media are
used to solve certain types of water problems. A description of these different
filter media and their functions can be found here.
The
Control Valve is the device that
sits usually on the top of the softener or filter tank and "controls" the
rinsing or backwashing function needed to refresh the softener or filter media.
The control valve is the heart of the water softener or filter system. They
require an internal clock to keep track of time and days before regeneration. If
your water softener is metered or "on demand" then that control valve will keep
track of your water usage and schedule regeneration accordingly. Only a water
softener, not a water filter can be metered.
